Let The Good Times Begin

By Lyndell Price

Tonight my travels took me to "Almost Heaven," to the town of Princeton, West Virginia where I attended the club meeting of the Mercer County Coon Hunters Association. The club hosted the first Bench Show and Nite Hunt of the 2006 AKC events year.

The Mercer County Coon Hunters Association was formed in 1973. The 2006 club officers are President—James Cook, Vice President—Ralph Shrewsbury, and Sect. & Trea. –Melvin Bishop. The Mercer County club has been active in holding major events including the West Virginia State Championship. Mr. Cook told me they held the first and second Youth Championships in the State of West Virginia as well.

Mr. James M. Atwell, Jr. of Rocky Gap, Virginia served as the Bench Show Judge and Hunt Director at the January 2nd event where the Best Female of Sho was Jones Bella, owned by Mr. Gary Jones of Princeton, W.Va..

After the meeting and the show, four dogs went to the woods hoping for a cast win with plus points. That cast win earns credit toward the dog's next title, a cast win toward the State Leader or Breed Leader title, a possible birth in the Top 16 at the AKC National Championship, and qualification for the 50% discount on their entry into the 2006 World Championship! Man, there's a lot wrapped up in that cast win isn't there?

The Mercer County Coon Hunters Association will be holding AKC events in the near future so if you are in the Princeton area, start making plans to attend their 2006 AKC events.

The Future is NOW at the New AKC!
