Into The Heart Of Coonhunting
5/13/2006 11:25:13 AM
Rochester, MN – I arrived yesterday afternoon, right next door to the world renowned Mayo Clinic and an hour or so south of the popular Mall of America. It was raining and in the lower forties as I made the hour drive southeast on Hwy #63 and #16 to the wonderful little town of Preston, Minnesota. This is a beautiful part of the country, lush farm ground boasting dark black soil and rolling hills laced with terrace farming strips of bright green wheat.
Heading through the town of Spring Valley I started dropping down into the Root River Valley as the open farming ground gave way to bigger hills, pasture ground and substantial tracts of timber. This area is home to some of the absolute best coon hunting the world has to offer. The scenery around the small town of Preston took me back more than twenty years ago to a coon hunting trip I took with a few hunting buddies in this very same area. The Root River Bridge at the south of town looked to be a new addition, but as I turned right toward the Fillmore County Fairgrounds there was that recognizable Mom & Pop campground where I had pitched a tent in late October of 1984. These days I can’t imagine spending a week in a tent with night time temperatures dropping into the high teens, but it really didn’t seem like that big of a deal back then.
As I pulled into the fairgrounds I was greeted by Root River Valley Houndsmen's Vice President Phil Kruegel and board member/Heartland Classic Ramrod, Sheldon Swenson. We walked into the building and found club members preparing for the evening’s non-AKC licensed nite hunt and bench show. Treasurer, Keith Brogan along with his son, the Se ecretary Marc Brogan and his wife Koryne prepared a wonderful barbecue meal back in the kitchen. President Nevin Verieze arranged the bench show area where he would carry out his judging duties in just a short while.
I set up the AKC table and copy machine to assist area hunters with their free registration needs and to discuss the exciting AKC Coonhound Program. It wasn’t long before the hunters were coming in to register their dogs and wanting to learn more about the 2006 AKC Minnesota State Championship taking place on Saturday, May 13 at this same location.
The flyers I brought along giving details of the upcoming Heartland Classic in nearby Tomah, Wisconsin http://www.akccoonhounds.org/heartland.asp the $25,000 2006 AKC World Championship in Warsaw, Indiana http://www.akccoonhounds.org/2006akc.asp and the AKC Black Gold/Gold Medal Series http://www.akccoonhounds.org/blackgold.asp were going as fast as I could put them out on the table.
Stay tuned tonight and tomorrow morning for results of the 2006 AKC Minnesota State Championship Hunt and Show. http://forum.akccoonhounds.org/viewtopic.php?p=8810#8810
