Journal entry for December 31, 2006

The last day of 2006 has dawned under partly cloudy skies here in the Tarheel State. Yesterday was a beautiful day and I was able to do some pup training with a young Plott I am working. It was a good day to be in the out of doors.

Across the southern Appalachians and the coastal Carolina swamps, those that use their hounds for hunting black bears saw their seasons coming to a close this weekend. Reports of many bears being harvested indicate that the population of our largest game animal are strong and growing. Bear hunting with hounds is an exciting, often grueling sport and plays an important part in managing this magnificent resource. Bear populations are thriving along the eastern seaboard from Maine to Florida and westward into states such as Arkansas and Oklahoma where bears were once thought to be extinct. The conservation movement begun by Teddy Roosevelt in which hunters themselves provide funds for management, has brought our nation's game populations to record heights.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP VIDEO - We posted the video of the 2006 AKC World Championships and the National Youth Championships yesterday. Our webmaster, Mike Phillips worked hard to put as much of the action as possible into a manageable format that wouldn't take you all day to download. I think you will enjoy the result. Simply click on the banner at the upper right of the home page or try this link for a great overview of all the action at Warsaw.

If you have high speed Internet service and have the time to wait for the download, try the "T1/T3" version for optimum clarity. Otherwise use the "dial up" or "cable" versions depending on your system.

We had a great time in Warsaw and you'll be able to enjoy all the highlights in this exciting video production. It's just one more way the New AKC is working to bring more enjoyment to our sport than ever before.

Have a blessed Sunday with your families.
