Journal entry for Thursday, July 19, 2007
Across the nation families are traveling today and tomorrow to attend the first ever AKC Youth World Championship in Decatur, Tennessee. My prayers are with each of them for traveling safety. The events this weekend exemplify, more than anything we’ve done with the New AKC to date, the spirit of this program and that is the goal to put “fun” back into the sport of coon hunting.
I talked with Executive Field Rep Jimmy Phillips this morning and he said, “Steve, the great thing about working with these kids is that they are honest. You never know what they are going to say.” While we all get a kick out of the kids, there’s a lot we can learn from them too. It’s that innocence that kids bring to our game that if properly nurtured will bring about the fairness we strive for in the sport in the years to come. These kids start out just full of the love of family and of the dogs and of the g eat out of doors. Those three elements create an experience for a young person that can be a positive influence for them as long as they continue in the sport. We want to be a part of that process and we believe this weekend at the Youth World Championship is a great place to start.
The phones have been ringing steadily in the Coonhound Events Department from parents calling about the events of this weekend. If you have a young handler at home or in your club, load them up and head down to Decatur, Tennessee this weekend . You will laugh a lot, learn a lot, and go home with the great satisfaction that you are helping to build the future for our sport.
All kids entering the AKC Youth World Championship hunt or show will receive the t-shirt shown above courtesy of FRM Gold Select dog food and and a Black Gold Youth World Championship hat, courtesy of Black Gold.
Good luck!
